Thinking Outside of the Facebook, Other Social Networking Companies Make Their Mark
Social Guy)
Although unrivaled in popularity for now, MySpace and Facebook are not the only social networking sites users are turning to. For some it is an issue of demographics, for others it’s not having consistent access to a computer but wanting to remain in constant contact with friends and reap the benefits offered by social networking and for others it’s an attempt to find a site matching their needs and lifestyle.

MocoSpace, North America’s largest mobile social community is one of these sites. Catering primarily to Hispanics, African-Americans, and other minorities, Mocospace allows users to chat and make friends on the go. According to a recent Pew Internet & American Life Project survey, Latinos (more than any other ethnic group) are more likely to use their cell phone to text, play a mobile game, or e-mail. This highly mobile demographic is relying increasingly on the various applications of the mobile gadget, and businesses are catching on.

FunkySexyCool is another such site. Twenty somethings like to be able to connect with their peers, without the feeling that they are making a life-long commitment. Traditional sites like Match.com and eHarmony are too stuffy and alienate users. New sites like FunkySexyCool allow twenty somethings to connect with others in a Fun & Flirtatious way. Users are encouraged to vote their peers- Funky, Sexy, or Cool, which opens up conversations and potential relationships.

ShoZu has managed to successfully meet somewhere in the middle of mobile social networking by positioning themselves as a ‘bridge’ from your phone to a slew of social networking sites. It’s an application allowing multiple uploads of pics, videos and messaging to over 30 different sites including Facebook, Photobucket and Twitter.
If you want to know more or want to say something regarding the social networking phenomenon and how there’s more to the market than just MySpace and Facebook, then please post it in your comment.
