Introducing Drop.io API for Development Community
![]()
As you know, Drop.io is more than a destination for private file sharing, its a live and growing input / output platform. They are continuing their growth with the release of Application Programming Interface (API) developer’s platform. The new API developer’s tools are designed to be the easiest way possible to route data and content between, and among, people.
Drop.io is the Web’s most convenient and simple way to privately share images, video, audio, documents and other digital content through ‘drops’. Each ‘drop’ is non-searchable, non-networked, does not require any type of account registration, can be password-protected and set to expire after a period of time.
To demonstrate the capability of the API, they have developed some applications built using client libraries on top of the REST API (Ruby, C# and Javascript):
Usend.io : The easiest way to send large files to email recipients by simply adding files, and telling drop.io to whom they should be sent. Users can now send files by rapidly uploading those files to a ‘drop’, add the email addresses that they want to send it to and leave it to drop.io to do the rest. Usend.io demonstrates the core simplicity of the drop.io platform in regards to moving data around the Internet – simple in and simple out. Usend.io was developed in less than 3 hours.
Twitterslurp : Users can search Twitter messages for a unique word or term and have the results, sorted by sentiment, placed in a drop.io ‘drop’. Twitterslurp demonstrates the power of using drop.io ‘drops’ as a repository for temporary application storage.
Collab.io : A dead simple way to create collaborative digital meeting space on the fly. Users set a date, specify recipients, and add notes and files. All meeting members are notified of the meeting time and conference call details, and granted access to a collaborative file sharing environment. Collab.io demonstrates the access that developers can have to drop.io sharing and communication tools and services.
Ha! Ha! You’re in a Photo : A simple, irreverent web site that allows users to upload, ‘tag’, and lookup photos. Ha! Ha! You’re in a Photo uses drop.io’s API javascript client library, completely forgoing the need for server-side scripting for the entire app. The application is comprised of just handful of static html pages, without any database – and was also built in less than a day.
New Drop.io apps Usend.io, Twitterslurp, Collab.io, Ha! Ha! You’re in a Photo unveiled to showcase drop.io’s API as the simple “Switchboard” for the Internet.
“We are going to open the API with more and more functionality, allowing developers to exact even greater control over exactly how ‘drops’ are created and what they can do.” said drop.io’s CEO and Founder Sam Lessin.
Drop.io was founded by Sam Lessin in 2007 and has raised $3.9M in financing from RRE Ventures and DFJ Gotham.
