Tips For Creating A Truly Good Infographic

In the beginning of the internet content was rather limited. Message boards were king, and the only real drive was communication and networking. But over time that changed as the technology became more sophisticated, and imagery has been an important element to that progression. Now you wouldn’t think about publishing content that didn’t have some sort of visual reference, not unless it was a purely academic or technical work.

Thanks to Pinterest images are becoming an even more powerful tool in the world of marketing. In particular, a good infographic can easily be launched into viral status. That is, as long as you know how to make a truly interesting graphic that people want to share.

With a couple of tips you can make something really unique and spread it all across the web. Here are some tricks to create and promote your infographic.

1. Remember that infographics are meant to be simple. First and foremost, you want things to be simple. All information, no matter how complicated the subject, should be understood by the layman. The entire point behind infographics is presenting data in quick, efficient and easily memorized way. Before you add something to your graphic, rewrite it a few times in different ways until it is broken down to the most basic level while still being coherent. Pair that with pictures that represent the concept jut as clearly. My recommendation is to ask yourself if the finished product could be understood by a 12-year-old.

2. Keep things informative and factual. Lately I have been seeing infographics that are going into opinion territory. This is always a bad idea. People read infographics in order to get informed about any given subject. If they wanted an opinion they could go to a comic or other visual source. Double check your facts and only include those that are both accurate and helpful to the reader.

3. Don’t let things get cluttered. Once you have your collection of facts you might find yourself having to cut a few things out that aren’t relevant to the central topic. This is to keep things from getting too cluttered, which makes it both visually unappealing and difficult to read. Even if you make a large graphic it should be orderly and succinct, only large because you have included a lot of quick facts within it. Not because you have expanded on each point.

4. Be interactive in your presentation. A static infographic is fine, but an interactive one is better. It catches the eye, drawing the attention of the user and holding it for a longer period of time. It also makes them more likely to share it. Some ideas for interactive graphics include those with clickable notations, graphics that light up when you hover over a section, or even graphic containing moving cartoons and sounds. Let your creativity soar and make something that is a bit more than the rest.

5. Don’t forget to be entertaining. Another reason people choose infographics is to be entertained while they learn. If you manage to put in something that bring a chuckle or a smile, or even just use colorful images that will keep the brain engaged, you will see your graphic do much better than those who fail to entertain while they inform.

6. Make sure people know where it came from. This is an area where you have to strike the right balance. You want to let people know where the original infographic came from, but you don’t want to be obnoxious about it. A simple watermark at the bottom with your website is fine, but an introduction is also a good idea. For example, you could say “(Website Name) Presents: (Infographic Title)”. It looks good and immediately shows the viewer the copyright information.
